Tribal Practices in Ear Gauging by Mark Wilson
Our knowledge of ear gauging with respect to its use by ancient civilizations has been acquired through studying ancient relics, paintings and even mummified bodies. This knowledge has been reinforced by studying civilizations of more recent times, including present-day cultures in Asia, Africa, Japan and South America. It is evident that ear gauging was , and still is, used by tribal elders to signify their status, while for women it was more decorative but also an indication of womanhood.
However, did our ancestors use stretched piercings for any reason other than to indicate their standing in the community? They did not gauge ears for fashion, but many women used ear gauging to make them look better. Others used it as a means of stating their maturity: 'Look at me: I am grown up and am able to bear children.'
For some it may even have been a contest: who could create the most outlandish forms of ear stretching possible? This friendly rivalry often went beyond ears to noses and lips.
The oldest person know to have use ear gauging is Otzi the Iceman, discovered high in the Alps and believed to have originated from 3300 BC.
Otzi had gauged ears, and also tattoos, providing proof that body decoration was common at least five thousand years ago - but how about today? Why do people gauge their ears today?
Mursi Tribal Customs
In the Mursi tribe of the lower Omo River valley in Ethiopia, it has been the custom for girls to have their lower lips and earlobes pierced once they have reached puberty. The piercings are progressively stretched in diameter between the ages 13-15 and replaced with wooden plugs. Ultimately, these are replaced by wooden or clay plates of from 5 to over 20 cm diameter. The plates used in ear gauging are of lower diameter than the lip plates (known as burgui).
The young woman is then known as a Bhansanai, indicating that she has passed into womanhood with a correspondingly higher status within her tribe. The plates are generally hand-made and can be extremely beautifully carved and decorated. The lip plates are not worn permanently, but would usually be worn for special occasions or when serving food to men.
The Masai Custom of Ear Gauging
The Masai of Kenya tend to stretch their earlobe piercings by gravity: they hang heavy jewellery from the lobes that stretch them over time. That's why you generally see long narrow gauging with the Masai than neat round holes, and why the older women have the longest gauges.
Although ear gauging has been traditional with both Masai men and women, many young men are now refusing to have it done. It is becoming more of a female custom, as it is with the Fulani tribe discussed immediately below. Masai girls will have their earlobes pierced using any sharp object: a knife or thorn for example, and they will be progressively stretched by hanging increasingly heavy weights from them. Some will also use insertion tapers or employ some other modern technique, but in usually the gauge is increased as described above.
The Fulani People of Central Africa
Fulani women employ a custom of small ear gauging, so that the piercing itself is relatively narrow diameter. Because of this, they tend not to use flesh tunnels or large plugs, but smaller diameter jewellery. It is common for the Fulani to wear large hoops from their stretched earlobes, and from these hoops they will hang further jewellery such as earrings. They also wear ear gauges in the form of large golden domes, and like the Masai, as the women age, their gauges increase through natural stretching.
Gauging Ears in Mexico and Central America
The Mayans of Central America and southern Mexico, and later the Aztecs of central Mexico, used ear gauging as a means of personal adornment and to attain social standing. By piercing their ears and inserting plugs of increasing sizes, these cultures were able to stretch their ears to large diameters. However, the jewellery used to adorn them was more traditional in the form of hoops and earrings, but also jade (Mayan), gold and silver items of many different types, including flesh tunnels, plugs and bars.
Ear Gauging in Asia
Among the Asian countries in which ear gauging has been carried out extensively are Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Japan and Borneo. The Lahu of Thailand and the Karen-Paduang, mainly in Myanmar, carry out ear stretching using the 'long-ear' method used by the Masai. That is, they load their pierced ears with heavy jewellery that stretch the piercing downwards to extend the earlobe and the size of the piercing.
They do this because they regard the ears as sacred, and therefore should be adorned with as much jewellery as they can hold. The women of these tribes believed this would make them more beautiful, while the men expected enhanced strength. The practice remains to this day, although only married women should wear plugs or huge flesh tunnels
The Ainu of Japan observed a similar custom, as did the Berawan people of Borneo, but this has now all but died out for religious or superstitious reasons and lives on generally only for its appeal to the young as it does in the West. Ear gauging is rapidly overtaking tattooing worldwide as a means of bodily adornment with a difference.
