Glowstick as Light Source Producer by Shahbaz Ahmad
You may have seen them being waved aloft at music gigs or in clubs, but what exactly are wholesale glow sticks?
Although a range of other products such as glow necklaces and glow bracelets have sprung up since their invention, wholesale glowsticks typically consist of a pliable plastic cylinder or tube measuring around ten to thirteen centimetres long (four to five inches), and measuring just under two point five centimetres (Around an inch) in diameter.
In order to create the light that a glow stick produces, a chemical process known as chemilluminescence takes place, which causes the glow stick to produce its own light source. This was a discovery made by Laszlo J. Bollyky, David Iba Sr, Michael M. Rauhut and Robert W. Sombathy. Their research was developed from work by Edwin A. Chandross for Bell Labs with Richard D. Sokolowski of Eh.M Labs. The synthesising of the chemical process, which is also used in the natural world with creatures such as fire flies and pilot fish, was dubbed Cyalume and consists of phenyl oxalate ester combined with a synthetic dye and hydrogen peroxide. In wholesale glow sticks, these chemicals are isolated, one being contained inside a glass vial and the other surrounding the vial inside the plastic tube. When this tube is bent, the glass inside it breaks and the chemicals combine. The process causes electrons inside the glow stick to move at a rapid rate, producing a source of light. This process is known as chemical kinetics.
There are a number of patents, most of which are allocated to the US Navy, for glow stick style devices by various inventors, including Eugene Daniel Guth and Bernard Dubrow, who claimed to have invented a Packaged Chemilluminescent Material in 1965. In 1976, a device called a Chemiluminescent Signal Device was patented by Steven M. Little, John H. Lyons and Vincent J. Esposito. The device consisted of a single glass vessel suspended inside a second substance, which when broken could mix with the chemical inside the glass to produce light. This invention most closely resembles the wholesale glowsticks we see today, however a further improvement to the design was made by Richard Taylor Van Zandt in 1977 with the inclusion of a steel ball inside the plastic tube to break the glass up when the tube was shaken.
Since then, wholesale glow sticks have been used for a number of different applications; to demonstrate the process of chemilluminescence in classrooms, as emergency lighting and of course at gigs and concerts. Other products have been developed from the original model such as glow necklaces and glow bracelets. These tend to be made from a more flexible form of plastic which is able to take on many shapes. Products such as glow necklaces and glow bracelets can commonly be found on many online stores and on the high street along with wholesale glowsticks, which since their inception have become not only a remarkable scientific discovery but a useful one too, with many purposes.
