I went to ross today, and saw a jade green Elephant Pendant, for 19.99 on sale from 40.00. What are the chances it is real?

There are many different types of jade. Some of good and lesser quality. Different colours too. So prices vary greatly.
I am not a gemologist but one thing to detect real jade from plastic ( lots of them around) even sold in the best hotels.
Your piece of jade should make a scratch on a glass top. Actually in China many shops have scratched glass tops for customers to detect whether it is real or not. It is allowed. It is very hard but very breakable at the same time.
It should be cold to the touch.
If you drop it..not from 3 meters high lol..it should make a distinctive "bing" sound not a muffled one.
But even then..it could be another stone which had been injected with a green dye.
Difficult to know nowadays what is real and what is not. Turquoise is a much imitated stone too !
The elephant might represent long life...
But if the answerer above could see that it is the wrong Chinese character. I would not bother.

Jade is very revered by Chinese people.
Everybody can wear Jade..you do not have to be Chinese you know -). I do not because I do not like the colour green..
