French vs Chinese, which one is better?
which language is sexy, noble, beautiful and glamourous? which one is more spoken in many countries?
I personally like French much better than Chinese.
French is byfar better sounding. If you listen to French people speak, the language is designed to sound beautiful (hence the liaisons) and sounds wonderful. It at one time was one of the main languages of the world (basically the equivalent of English in today's society many years ago) and is used often in Canada, France, and various African nations. French and English are so alike, the grammar structure comes easy. The biggest challenge it really just learning pronunciation.
Chinese on the other hand is a big challenge in itself. It lacks many roots to English, so unlike French, vocabulary will be much harder to learn. In addition, the Chinese writing system is a mess. I have been with a Chinese student who studied the language for over 10 years and is majoring in the Chinese, who complain that it takes him over an hour to simply read 3-4 pages of Chinese, and that skimming is not possible for him. Would this ever be a challenge for someone studying French or Spanish for ten years? Not at all.
The thing with Chinese though is it is the most used language, followed by Spanish then English. However, Chinese is very much limited to just China. Few other countries really speak it (i.e. English is used in UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc, while Chinese for the most part is just used in China).
Another thing to consider is that Chinese is very hard to pick up for second language learners. I remember my mom telling me a story of how when she went to Germany, although she didn't speak German, she was able to talk to a lot of the people there in French or English as they knew them as a second language. Very few people are able to learn Chinese as a second language.
cheers
Ed
